Forgotten

Civilizations bury their origins Under layers of accumulated time Every generation rewrites the story Until the source becomes impossible to find We excavate what ancestors left behind Fragments of pottery, remnants of bone Trying to piece together who they were But context dies faster than stone Are we meant to remember Or meant to let go Forgetting forward into tomorrow Or drowning in what we'll never know Every language that goes extinct Takes entire ways of thinking with it Every elder who dies without speaking Leaves gaps we can't refit Maybe forgetting is evolution Clearing space for what comes next Maybe clinging to origins Keeps us locked in obsolete text The species moves by forgetting The species dies by forgetting too Which memories do we abandon Which ones do we hold as true Time erases more than it preserves The past becomes mythology Maybe the point isn't remembering where we came from But choosing who we're going to be
